You can calculate the missing variables easily by using your SPSS software and I am going to show how. But before that I should say something about missing values.

When is a value of a variable being missed? It can be happened in three times. First, when the field data collector do miss to collect data from the respondent. Second, when the field supervisor or field tester fails to test and then replace the missing values. Third, at the time of data entry. I see in most cases either the field researcher missed to fill up the questionnaire and for that missing values were found, or it was found because of the fault of data entry person.

If you find missing values, I would like to suggest you to recheck you questionnaire again. If possible, then send any person to fill up the data from the field. If not possible, then check the data set with the questionnaire. If the value is missed at the time of data entry, you can correct it easily.

Another type of missing value is found in SPSS research. If you have the question with condition that if the code for the question is 1, then go directly to the question number 10. In that case, some of the questions between first and tenth question show the missing values. From my experience, I would like to suggest you to avoid missing values, if possible. You can give a specific code for the expected missing or inappropriate answers.

However, now I am going to answer of your question. To find the number of missing values, you just use frequency. With other values, you will find the frequency of missing values as well in your SPSS research. If you want to know in what case number the value is missing, then select the missing value cases under data tab and then find the frequency of primary ID of your SPSS research.
