• There are some differences between service and ranks and knowing these differences is very important for SPSS research. Before discussing about service, I say something about rank.

Suppose, you have to sets of items and those items are very different two each other in a specific character. Now if you count these like that “The first is higher than the second one or “The second is lower than the first one” or “Both of the items are equal”, then it can be said that there is a difference between two items. A one item must be placed in upper position or lower position or same position. That means there is an order between the items. Now we can say the rank in this way that “if the items are ordered” then ranking is possible.

In statistics or SPSS research, when data are sorted, numerical or ordinal values are replaced by their rank. As example, if you have the numerical data of today’s’ temperature of five cities like as 15.2 for Moscow, 34.9 for Dhaka, 17.8 London, 25.3 Delhi and 22.1 Kuala lampur, the rank of the cities will be 1, 3, 5, 4, 2 respectively for ascending order and 2, 4, 5, 3, 1 for descending order.

In SPSS research, you can use some statistical tests to calculate based on ranks-

2. Kruskal-Wallis test
3. Rank products
4. Wilcoxon rank-sum test
5. Wilcoxon signed-rank test

Now about series. When rank discusses about hierarchy which could be in ascending or descending order, the series discuss about one after another or a settings or procedure of data sorted by step-by-step and there is no hierarchy. As example, publishers publish series of books on a specific subject. However, in some cases, rank and series can be same. For example, studying in grade 1 – grade 5 is a matter of series which is happened one after another. At the same time, there is a hierarchy of the grades. In that case, according to the research objective, you can define whether it is series or rank data.
