What are the null hypothesis and research hypothesis in SPSS research?

The null hypothesis is a hypothesis which SPSS researcher tries to disprove. The term was originally coined by English geneticist and statistician Ronald Fisher. This null hypothesis is typically paired with another hypothesis named alternative hypothesis that asserts a particular relationship between the phenomena. Two statisticians Jerzy Neyman and Egon Pearson formalized the notion of the alternative. You need to understand the both term ‘Null’ and ‘Alternative’ hypothesis to get the clear idea about null hypothesis. According to the Wikipedia, “the alternative need not be the logical negation of the null hypothesis and predicts the results from the experiment if the alternative hypothesis is true. The use of alternative hypotheses was not part of Fisher’s formulation, but became standard.”

As I said earlier, according to the rules, null hypothesis can never be proved which means that your data cannot approve null hypothesis. It can only reject a null hypothesis or fail to reject it. This sentence gives the idea that there is nothing in null hypothesis related to the word ‘Accept’. As example, if you compare the result of two groups (eg: boys and girls) reveals no statistically significant difference between the two, it does not mean that there is no difference in reality. It only means that you do not have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis in your SPSS research.

Additionally research hypothesis includes the set parameters involve in a research. According to the definition, a research hypothesis is the statement created by researchers when they speculate upon the outcome of a research or experiment. A number of null hypotheses are required to explain the research hypothesis. Initially, researcher needs to operationalize what variables will be measured and how it will be measured. Then set the significant level and run the appropriate significant test in SPSS research. After that, run the test and interpret the output. Finally, need to accept/ reject the null hypothesis.
